AgFeed shareholders facing off against Hormel Foods in court

New Jersey business owners may not be aware that Hormel Foods Corp. is facing a lawsuit after AgFeed Industries filed a complaint in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the same court where the company filed for bankruptcy in July 2013. The suit is seeking an unknown amount in damages. AgFeed's complaint against Hormel stems from allegations that Hormel knew of contract violations being executed by M2P2 LLC, a company whose operations AgFeed had purchased.

Lawsuit over bid for Boardwalk tram

On Sept. 9, JJJN LLC in New Jersey is suing Atlantic City and a rival rolling chair company over a lost bid for Boardwalk tram services. The company claims that the specifications and bidding process for the city's requested tram service trial run was unsound. The claim alleges that the city was attempting to circumvent public bidding laws when managing the contracts, alongside demonstrating bad faith.

Wedding venue sued by local borough

A new state law allows wineries in New Jersey to host weddings and other types of special events. However, in recent business litigation, the Borough of West Cape May alleges that Willow Creek Winery is not complying with the conditions required in the new legislation. The borough also contends that the winery needs to apply for a state pilot program before it is allowed to continue hosting events.

Stay granted for New Jersey Justice Center construction contract

Terminal Construction Corp. has appealed a decision from a superior court judge that upheld the awarding of a construction contract to build the Bergen County Justice Center given to a rival company. A state appellate judge issued a temporary stay on Aug. 4 for the $66 million contract until he can hear arguments in the commercial litigation dispute. The county originally chose Terminal's competitor Dobco Construction Services for the project, which includes building a parking garage next to the center.

Lawsuit alleges third-party energy supplier fraud

New Jersey state agencies have initiated a civil action against three third-party suppliers of energy. The lawsuit alleges that the three energy providers falsified promises of reductions in monthly billing to hundreds of their customers. The lawsuit asks for recovery of alleged damages for consumers in addition to attorney fees, costs and civil penalties. It also demands adherence to standards of marketing, contracts and advertising that were allegedly violated.

Starbucks being sued by shareholders over business dispute

Shareholders for Starbucks have filed a lawsuit for $2.8 billion due to an alleged contract breach with Kraft Foods. According to the lawsuit, the executive officers and board of directors for Starbucks breached their fiduciary duties. In November, it was ordered that Starbucks give Kraft $2.75 billion. This involved how the packaged coffee was distributed in grocery stores, and an arbitrator said that a breach of contract indeed happened.
