You may have heard by now that the New Jersey Nets hired a new general manager last month. In mid-July, Nets president Rod Thorn officially handed over the position to Billy King during a press conference. King was formerly the president and general manager for the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers had some significant success while he was with them, including making it to six postseasons and the 2001 NBA Finals, but he was fired in 2007.
According to NorthJersey.com, King was criticized while with the Sixers for certain business decisions, including questionable acquisitions. King made the controversial decision to acquire Glenn Robinson, Derrick Coleman, and Chris Webber when they were near the end of their careers. King said he has reflected on his time with the Sixers in the years since being fired and will have a new business strategy when it comes to the Nets.
The Nets had $32 million to spend on free agency this summer, and so far they have acquired Travis Outlaw, Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, and Johan Petro. King says he is going to take his time in deciding how to spend the rest of it. He says that he will be talking with Rod Thorn and coach Avery Johnson to develop a plan on how to use the money in the best interests of the team. He said during the press conference that he is not in a hurry to spend the available assets and wants to make smart and prudent decisions toward his goal of bringing the Nets a championship.
