What's the real damage of file sharing to the music industry?

Getting something for nothing seems like a great deal to cash-deprived music fans, many of whom are all too happy to click a mouse to illegally download a digital file of a recorded song. The same people, in most cases, would never dream of walking out of a music store with a shoplifted CD of recorded music in their clothes. However, in many cases, these individuals fail to recognize that illegal downloading constitutes the theft of copyrighted intellectual property just as much, even if done from the comfort of their own home.

Acquiring a company? You may have a lot to learn

In the process of one company's acquisition of another, there's often an assumption that the purchased company will simply adapt to its new parent by becoming homogenized and abandoning much of its former culture. But there's usually plenty that a company can learn from the business it's acquiring.

T-shirt makers accused of using Tim Tebow's name on products

It seems New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow can't escape the clothing business, even though he technically hasn't touched a thread of merchandise. Last month we discussed Nike Inc.'s lawsuit against Reebok International Ltd, accusing its rival of violating the terms of a contract regarding Tebow merchandise. Reebok wanted to squeeze every last dollar out of its licensing contract with the NFL before Nike launched its own line of Tebow apparel. The two companies reached a settlement to remove thousands of jerseys sporting the quarterback's name after he was traded from the Denver Broncos to the Jets.

Wayne Newton locked in legal battle over home conversion plans

Entertainer Wayne Newton is fighting a back-and-forth legal battle over his lavish Las Vegas estate, which is undergoing a conversion into a $50 million celebrity museum. The company that purchased the rights to the project is suing Newton, his wife and her mother, claiming the family purposely delayed the project to ensure it's never completed. But Newton's attorney says the move is a pre-emptive strike against his plans to sue the company for breach of contract after a series of construction delays.

New Jersey asphalt companies accuse competitor of bid-rigging

Two New Jersey asphalt companies are suing an out-of-state competitor, accusing it of conspiring with several local municipalities to control the road paving business. The commercial dispute involves seven eastern Pennsylvania cities, all of which are said to have played a role in the competing business' plan to rig the bidding process.

Paramount Pictures sues Puzo estate over 'Godfather' sequel

An ongoing feud between the estate of "The Godfather" author Mario Puzo and Paramount Pictures continues to heat up, but perhaps to the dismay of fans of the mafia saga, this one is a lot less gritty than those found in Puzo's books.

Breach of contract lawsuit over patents could determine Xbox fate

Microsoft and Google are locking horns once again, this time in a war over Motorola Mobility's patents. Recent court rulings have determined that Microsoft infringed on the patents, but depending on the outcome of a breach of contract lawsuit, those rulings could become moot.

5 Southern New Jersey United Way chapters to merge with Pa.'s

Whether you're the head of a large corporation or a tiny nonprofit, the goals of a merger or acquisition are often the same: to increase your company's presence and acquire more money. In the case of one merger currently under way in southern New Jersey, these goals should help the agency survive in the long term.
