Tennis star sues charity for breach of contract

On Behalf of | Mar 8, 2013 | Breach Of Contract |

Many New Jersey residents are probably familiar with famed professional tennis player Andy Roddick and his retirement from professional tennis. However, many may not realize that he recently filed a lawsuit over a contract dispute he is having with a charity.

According to reports, Roddick agreed to play in a charity tennis match last year and participate in a meet-and-greet event for the Miracle Match Foundation. The Miracle Match Foundation is a tennis based cancer charity created by another former professional tennis player. According to Roddick, he was supposed to be paid $100,000 for the appearance and match.

In the lawsuit, Roddick claims that the foundation sent him two $50,000 checks before the appearance last September. However, both of the checks bounced just days after the event and he has not received any money from the organization. Therefore, he has sued the Miracle Match Foundation, WKP Sports and Entertainment LLC and WKP Sports and Entertainment Co. for fraudulent transfer, unjust enrichment, breach of contract, fraud and theft. He is seeking both punitive and actual damages in the suit.

Contract disputes, such as this one, can be complex and time consuming problems for New Jersey businesses. When contracts are not drafted clearly, each party to the contract can have different ideas about what is expected of them. When people are not on the same page, material breaches can occur when one party does not perform as expected.

With the right help, contracts can be negotiated and drafted so that each party knows how they need to perform. This will cut down on contract disputes, litigation costs and help businesses to be more productive.
